Asia Shabazz
Her mother is of Filipino ancestry, and her father is of African-American descent. During grade school, she attended Vena Gifted Magnet, a high-ability school in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley. At Vena, she was a member of the drill team, and outside of school, she trained as a singer and dancer and took voice lessons. Since Asia was born into the 90s, her music inspirations come from big artists such as, Whitney Houston, Brandy, TLC, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, and most of all, Janet Jackson. As a kid, Asia watched Ms. Jackson closely; everything about Janet was embraced: music, dance skills, and stage presence. To Asia, Janet is the total package and always will be. Asia says, “Watching her as a kid, I knew all I wanted to do was perform.”
Asia began acting and on television by the age of 9 years old. By the time she was 15, she appeared in Nikeprint ads. She also booked campaigns with Finish Line, Nintendo DS, Adidas, and Skechers. Asia pursued her career in dance and landed some big gigs for artists such as, Leona Lewis, Avril Levine, and Lil Romeo. In 2007, She was approached by record producer Chris Stokes to join a girl-group he was forming at the time called “Jane Doe.” After being with the group for over a year, she made the decision to move in a different direction to continue her passion for singing.
Asia later joined Collage, another girl-group that was formed by Danny Carter, Deforest “DJ” Taylor, and managed by Earl Johnson. Not being happy with the name “Collage,” the group name was changed to “HerStory,” and the slogan, “Every Girl Has a Story” later became the title of the group’s debut EP, which was released in January 2011 by Artist Link Entertainment.
After breaking up a few months after the HerStory debut release, Asia decided to still pursue her singing career and move forward as a solo artist. This decision led her to sit down with manager, Earl Johnson, to restructure her career. Asia is now doing local shows and performing with the School Tour to gain regional buzz in addition to recording new music for her solo debut EP, “Lessons in Love.” The EP is set to drop May 2012. The new album is described as a fusion of R&B, Pop, and Rock with an urban undertone that audiences are sure to love and appreciate.
